Fri 07-Nov-2008

Nearly two in five IT professionals are unfamiliar with the concept of unified storage, research reveals.

A study conducted by ONStor at the Gartner Data Centre Summit found out of 1,600 professionals only 58 per cent knew what the term means.

Defined by the researcher as being a single storage infrastructure which functions to unify fibre channel, storage area network and network attached storage devices.

The study found of those who believed they knew the term, 43 per cent believed it was the same as storage virtualisation and the rest that it was a combination of typical storage and back-up.

Vice president for corporate marketing at ONStor says businesses need to be educated about the benefits and existence of the technique.

"The vendor community needs to join forces with analysts to drive this message home," he states.

NetApp recently announced a new product line - the FAS3100 series - which contained a unified storage architecture.ADNFCR-1505-ID-18865485-ADNFCR
