Data centre best practices 'could save 1m kilowatt hours'
Adopting data centre best practices could save companies a million kilowatt hours, a report suggests.
Gartner states between 35 per cent and half of energy costs for basic data centres are used on cooling, whereas green versions use 15 per cent.
Among the 11 suggestions is plugging holes in the floor to prevent cold air escaping, co-ordinating computer room air-conditioning units and installing sensors.
Research vice president at the firm Paul McGuckin claims even small data centres use large amounts of energy.
"Virtually all data centres waste enormous amounts of electricity using inefficient cooling designs and systems," he states.
He suggests the key issue which needs to be addressed is the interaction between the air being used to cool the computers and the higher-temperature exhaust air being emitted.
Last month, the British Computer Society issued a white paper on data centre efficiency it hoped would combat misconceptions about implementing green IT procedures.
