Green IT initiatives 'can cut overheads'

Wed 19-Nov-2008

UK enterprises can save money by putting in place greener IT initiatives such as virtualisation, it has been claimed.

Michael Dean, group marketing manager at the National Computing Centre, said that despite requiring an upfront investment, organisations will be able to cut costs in the long run by bringing in more environmentally-friendly facilities.

However, he went on to caution: "Whilst organisations are happy to undertake 'easy to implement solutions', such as switching off power of PCs overnight and print management, capital investments are less likely to be signed off."

Mr Dean went on to say that the reverse of this process is also true as it is possible for firms to save money as a desirable consequence of green IT practices.

Earlier this month, a report by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs indicated it has been able to consolidate 120 servers down to 12 by making use of virtualisation in its data centres.
