Leicestershire police deploy virtualisation

Tue 11-Nov-2008

A police force has adopted virtualisation technology in order to increase the mobility of its officers, a source reveals.

Leicestershire's constabulary are now able to use their files and work from a laptop whilst on the move, Silicon.com reports.

Central systems are accessed remotely, allowing responses to be quicker and more co-ordinated, removing the need to return to the base in order to source background data on an incident.

Information system analyst at Leicestershire police force James Pearce claims officers responding to a call can now receive the information while on the scene, due to the virtualisation of the files.

Emphasising the increased security of the method, he tells the news provider through virtualisation the data is not available outside of the station in its raw format.

"It's just pictures that are being transmitted over the network and keystrokes back in the opposite direction so the data itself remains in the data centre," he states.

Last month, a report by IDC claimed virtualisation technologies could be reaching a level of maturity.ADNFCR-1505-ID-18870941-ADNFCR
