Virtualisation 'must be comprehensively managed'

Tue 18-Nov-2008

The key to maximising the potential of virtualisation technology lies in managing it effectively, it has been claimed.

Ajei Gopal, executive vice president of IT services provider CA's enterprise IT management department group, said initial benefits of the technology were significant server consolidation and cost reductions but in order to make the most of the facility, customers require comprehensive management training.

Cameron Haight, research vice president at analyst Gartner, added that the over-provisioning model used by data centres for years is becoming unsustainable.

"As a consequence, a new, dynamic data centre model is emerging, driven by new management strategies and supported by virtualisation and automation technologies," he commented.

Last week, IT services provider Axispoint claimed the full costs of making use of virtualisation should be analysed before the product is rolled out, as its installation often contains hidden costs.

Spokesperson for the group Brian Shafer said the technology must be deployed with realistic expectations.
