EDF Energy commercial telecoms acquisition adds £20 million of network infrastructure to Interoute’s London network
London, UK, 24 April 2007 - Interoute, owner of Europe’s most advanced next-generation voice and data network, has expanded its network footprint in London with the acquisition of 51° from EDF Energy. Interoute’s newly acquired asset will service the huge demand it is experiencing for its advanced network services from the financial and media industries. The 170km of additional network significantly enhances Interoute’s footprint in the capital and brings thousands of potential new customers on-net.
The 51° network is a high-grade metropolitan area network (MAN) originally built in 2001 and bought for an undisclosed fee. This smart acquisition helps to quickly grow Interoute’s network offering, enabling improved connectivity for customers doing business in London’s key financial and media districts, including Soho, the City and the Docklands. The capital has firmly cemented its positions as a global finance centre and creative hub; with Interoute’s customers including some of the world’s leading banks and its media services division delivering terabytes of content for clients such as EMI and Universal on a daily basis.
Jim Kinsella, Interoute’s CEO and Executive Chairman, said: “We have been experiencing a surge in demand for our services across our network footprint and as London is our biggest communications hub, this investment made perfect sense. As demand continues to surge, we will make further investment in our network asset to ensure we are well prepared to service our customers across Europe now and in the future”
London is already a major hub for the company, acting as a conduit for 12,000 customers between Europe, USA, UAE and North Africa. This acquisition follows further investment by the company in its London operation earlier this year. Spurred by rapid demand and a high growth rate, this latest move enables Interoute to meet the increasing needs of its customers that have already purchased large amounts of new capacity as demand continues to rise.
